Set Your Toddler Up For Successful Sleep Routine with Brittany Sheehan

Brittany Sheehan is a mother of two and former fashion and beauty executive who found her calling providing ground, empathetic solutions for parents struggling with baby and toddler sleep through her sleep consulting business, Bicoastal Baby B.

As a new mom, Brittany studied and implemented unique sleep strategies for her two sons that had them both sleeping through the night at 3 months old. She was baffled and saddened at the number of fellow moms she met who seemed resigned to the fact that life with kids meant never-ending exhaustion.

So she decided to do something about it. Brittany took her passion and expertise and turned it into a full-time business. Now Brittany coaches moms and dads through newborn nap struggles, toddler bedtime battles and everything in between.

The Unspoken Topic

  • Sleep issues for toddlers are about what’s going on during the day- outside of sleep time. The goal is for toddlers to *want* to go to bed on their own.

What We Cover

Key Takeaways

  • Besides how the child is impacted by lack of sleep, it really impacts parents.
  • Sleep is good for children, but your child’s sleep is also good for parents.
  • If your kid is smart enough to test limits, they’re smart enough to understand new boundaries.
  • Helping your child sleep is not doing something TO them, it’s doing something FOR them.
  • When  you move siblings into the same room, you want to make sure they are both sleeping through the night and adjust schedules where they are going to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. If you are moving the baby into the toddler’s room, rearrange the room so it feels like it’s both kids’ rooms.

Actionable Solution

How to Set Your Toddler Up For Successful Sleep Routine

  • BEDTIME Routine is the most important part: Take a step back and decide what the bedtime routine will be. It can be whatever you want, as long as you’re consistent with it.
  • Offer autonomy to child. Give them some choice. They can pick the bedtime book or what PJs to wear, etc.
  • Toddlers not only need boundaries, but they crave them.
  • IF YOUR CHILD KEEPS LEAVING THE ROOM: A door monkey is a great tool and a safety measure, too. You can also use the walk-back method.
  • CHECK YOUR LIFESTYLE: Avoid sweets before bed, Limit screen time use right before sleep, incorporate fresh air each day, have intentional 1:1 time with all parenting partners and children. Move the affection and snuggles from 10pm  to 10am.

Hardest Decision Made as a Mom

  • Her decision to work full-time.

A New Tradition Started With Her Family

  • In the morning, all her kids get into the youngest kid’s bed and talk about what to expect for the day.
