Key Takeaways

  • You can change your birthing plan and/ or provider at any point during your pregnancy- no matter how far along you are.
  • The most important thing about your birthing plan is you feeling safe during birth.
  • Sonnet customized her birthing plan by laboring at home with a virtual doula for as long as possible.
  • Her doula also informed her husband on how exactly to support Sonnet during the labor progression.
  • Sonnet had a midwfie checking her dilation at home, so she would go to the hospital at the perfect time as to not spend too much time there.
  • She also requested an early release from the hospital- 6 hours after birth.
  • The pediatrician went to her home the following day to do the tests on her newborn and her midwife also went to check on Sonnet.

Actionable Solution

 How to Customize Your Birth

  • First, educate yourself on your options. Education is power!
  • Think outside the box.
  • When you’re doing your research, don’t be afraid to follow what makes you feel good and safe.

How to Feel Better Around Giving Birth During COVID-19

  • Know that the Labor and Delivery unit really is a separate part of the hospital and they do an amazing job at keeping things as stress-free as possible.
  • If you are giving birth during a time where they are not allowing doulas into the hospital, a virtual doula is incredible! Ally was Sonnet’s doula.
  • The longer you labor at the hospital, the more interventions that can happen. Do your best to labor as long as possible at home, if that’s what you want to do.
  • If you want to leave early, as your pediatrician if they can do the newborn screenings at your home the following day.
  • Hire a midwife to check you the following day, as well.
